While I’m still really pleased with my old IKEA Jerker desk, the stool that I bought to go with it at the time has no back support and isn’t really suitable for anything more than occasional use. So I’m currently looking to buy a new office chair, but because there are so many available I’m finding the choice a little bewildering. As I’ve had back problems in the past I’d like to get a chair that is both comfortable and ergonomic. I have a few options on my shortlist, but I was wondering if the WebWorkerDaily readers had any suggestions or tips?
This chair is fully adjustable, including the lumbar support, but at £170 ($250) it’s also quite expensive. It has great Amazon reviews, but is it worth the price? Ryman High Back Mesh Chair Doesn’t look to be as adjustable as the Lindo chair. Nor does it have stellar Amazon reviews, but it costs much less — £60. Lincoln Black Leather Office Chair I quite like the idea of a leather chair, and this one is adjustable and reasonably priced at £90, but I’m not sure that they’re all that practical compared to mesh chairs. The most expensive chair on my list at £230. Adjustable, with lumbar support. I’m going to go test out this chair at the IKEA store this weekend. One of my colleagues in Australia used to sit on a fit ball at work which, apparently, helped with his back problems. Have you tried replacing your office chair with a fit ball? How long did it take to get used to it, and did it help to alleviate back problems? That’s my current shortlist.

I've recently been on the hunt for a more comfortable chair for both gaming and home office work. I've been using an IKEA Markus that I bought several months ago. While sharp looking it lacked several key features that I need: 1. Thicker cushion base 2. Better height adjustment 5. Tilt feature (To be fair I don't tilt my chairs but it does have a rocking function and a full tilt mode with many different angles) To be fair the Markus sells for $229 CAD at IKEA and essentially you get what you pay for. I was looking at both the DXRacer chairs and some of the higher end office chairs (Herman Miller, Steelcase). My budget was under $1000 which pretty much eliminated the higher end Herman Miller and Steelcase entirely. Their mid to low range chairs are actually not great... I was referred to Maxnomic by a member here at OCN (thanks againInitially I wasn't entirely certain what the differences were between the brands. 1. Maxnomic chair arms are adjustable in 3D.
Essentially up, down, backwards, fowards and outwards from chair. 2. Built in lumbar support via adjustable knob. This was a big one for me as I find the "lumbar pillow" DXRacer provides to be pretty cheesy.I wanted a black on black chair with no colors or logos. Couldn't find the DXRacer in the right size for my frame in the color I wanted. The chair I ordered: Maxnomic has various chairs that are for different body sizes (similar to DXRacer) and also at slightly varying price points based on features. The unit I chose, the Commander S-III is rated for a height range of 6'0" to 6'7" and a weight of up to 285 pounds. I am 6'1" and weigh 190 pounds, I have a slim torso but fairly large legs and wide shoulders. I paid total, $740 CAD for the chair and that included shipping and duties. I ordered it on a Monday evening of this week and got it first thing this morning so essentially 2 business days. Maxnomic uses Fedex for deliveries. Ordering was pretty simple.
I selected the chair and the finish online and purchased it. The only option available was for a heavier base if the user was over 230 pounds (Which I am not). I got several confirmation emails as it was being processed and shipped. The chair arrived in a single white heavy cardboard box. I read a number of reviews online and assembly seems to have been something of an issue in the past. Currently the chair comes in 5 parts: 2. The base with the chair arms pre-attached 3. The metal base holding the gas mechanism 4. The gas mechanism itself Accessories are minimal and installation took about 8 minutes total. There is a detailed full color installation manual included. What I found interesting is that many of the steps in the manual had already been completed so even though they have updated their install format, the manual is still the original much more complex assembly. Assembly was as follows: - Use the included hex wrench/screwdriver combo - Attach the back to the base with four screws.
Very simple, holes align easily. - Flip chair over and attach mechanism base with again, 4 screws - Insert gas mechanism after you insert it in the plastic telescoping sleeve - Attach two plastic levers (one for height, one for locking tilt) - Attach 5 castors to base - Put base on - Flip chair over I read a couple of online reviews complaining about build quality. Mind you these were over a year old. Everything on the chair fit perfectly and all screws were aligned. I also watched a Youtube review where the owner of his chair had 3 complaints: The seat of the chair he purchased had raised wings on the side. Their lower end chairs have this feature. He mentioned he was not able to sit cross legged with one foot tucked under his other leg. Aside from the fact that this is a terrible way to sit in a chair, this particular model having a much larger, flatter chair base cushion would not be impacted by that. He also complained that the chair cushion was very firm.
First, the higher end models indicate that they provide a much thicker foam base, hence he had the base model and was sitting on a thinner memory foam layer. Second, memory foam chairs of this nature require a fair amount of break in time. He never mentioned whether or not he gave it a chance. From my perspective, I came from a much harder chair with thinner padding so this is quite an upgrade. It is quite firm but again break in time is required. His other comment was regarding the firmness of the armrests. They are quite firm but I think this may be a matter of how much weight you rest on them. For my use, my forearms and elbows are only lightly resting on them. For those that need cushy elbow support, this may not be the right fit. There is a slight smell from the PU Leather but that's normal and it will of course fade. Uncertain if I will keep the neck pillow attached as I typically don't sit back. Those that recline would benefit from it. So far I am quite pleased with the chair.
Delivery was very fast, the chair assembly was extremely simple and it is a durable and comfortable product exactly as described. Any questions let me know.
