A Leander High School student had a surprise ending to her senior year of prom after being handed the title of Leander High’s 2017 Prom Queen. Abby Cano and Keilany Solano were two of the five nominees for prom queen, and when Solano’s name was chosen as the winner she decided to re-write the rules. Solano handed her tiara and sash to Cano, awarding her the new prom queen of the 2017 senior class. Cano, who has down syndrome, is known for her gracious spirit, friendly attitude and for giving her peers high-fives through the hallways between class, according to a KXAN story. Solano knew what she had to do once she found out the news in the middle of the dance floor. “I did it because I knew at that moment she would be even happier than me, and I felt like she deserved it more,” Solano said. She has achieved State award-winning results during her years at Leander High School, and has served on the state board for the International Thespian Society. Linda is named to the National “Who’s Who of American Teachers” and was honored with being selected for the UIL Southwestern Bell Sponsor Excellence Award. She was also recognized by Governor Rick Perry as one of Texas’ top educators. More recently, she has been presented with the K-EYE Silver Apple Award. In August of 2004, Major traveled with her students to Edinburgh, Scotland where they were honored as one of the top two theatre departments in the state of Texas. Chuck Harris teaches Technical Theatre and assists with the IB theatre program at Leander High School. He received his Bachelor of Music from Texas Tech University. Mr. Harris has had success as both a music teacher and theatre director with advancing plays and UIL medalists at the State Academic Meet.
