We chose the Planetarium for a rainy day outing, and it was perfect for our family of three, with an 11-year-old. We took the metro and enjoyed the train ride out which brought us almost to the door (head left when you come out of the station, keep waking and you come right to it). It was pretty affordable with... This was our second time visiting the Planetarium. Each time offers new unique shows. The first show in the "Chaos" theater offers visitors a chance to sit in bean bags on the floor or on Adirondack chairs at the back of the room.

Each time we arrived 5 minutes early and all bean bag chairs were filled.... If you want to feel like an astronaut walking on far away planets, that is the place to be! The Rio Planetarium is an excellent choice for the young and old. My 83 yrs old dad and my 6 yrs old daughter were with me for the Mars show/program. WE all loved it and learn so muc. We spent the day visiting the Biodome, Botanical gardens, Insectarium and Planetarium. The planetarium was the favourite part. We were three adults, two teens and one preteen. You must get your tickets to reserve for a specific time, as the English shows only play at certain times of day. There were two movies and an exhibit area. Bought a packaged tickets to go there, only to find out the exhibits are free and the tickets are for the moive. If it was more clear I would choose Biodome instead. The movies (bought a double feature "Asteroid" (25 mins) & "One Day on Mars" (40 mins) are excellent - much better quality (visual & audio) than the IMAX...

We visit the botanical gardens and Biodôme every spring but held off visiting the planetarium because my son is younger. This year they have added a live musical show, Mira the Little Star, combined with the planetarium projection that is perfectly targeted to the 4-8 yr range (or a little younger if capable of sitting quietly for 30+mins). Very cool experience for the kids. Very clean and up to date. Could use a few more restaurants or cafes for refreshments. I really enjoyed the two shows we saw. The one that is still playing is One day on Mars. I recommend seeing as many as you can. We had to buy our tickets with a lot of time before our shows. We spent time in the Biodome while waiting. We visited the planetarium only because it was in a package price with the Biosphere. We would never have made a special trip, but were very happy we went. The shows lasted about 1-1/4 hours. Great visuals, very informative, comfortable seating. Get to the olympic Park early in the morning.

Toronto multi-instrumentalist River Tiber recently had his original song sampled by Drake (his voice can be heard on “No Tellin’”), and he also contributed cello, violin, and trombone to “Ray Gun,” from the recent BADBADNOTGOOD/Ghostface collaboration. There’s plenty to buzz about at Bass Camp, but the one thing each of these 20 participants have in common is talent. This room is brimming with creativity, and watching everyone vibe out to one another’s tracks bodes well for this weekend’s collaborative aspect. When we ask some of the participants how it feels to be chosen for RBMA Bass Camp Montreal, we're met with equal parts bewilderment and enthusiasm. Right away, we get the sense that being invited, and recognized on this level is a step towards validating everything these young artists have been working towards. Vancouver’s James Deen had trouble processing what was happening when he first found out. “I think I woke up and read the e-mail the whole way through, then started again, got about halfway through, then it finally hit me what I was reading.”

He adds, “the opportunity to go to a place I’ve always wanted to go, for something that I’ve always wanted to take part in, and meet and work with producers that I admire quite a bit, it’s kind of a dream come true, to be honest.” Once everyone was acquainted, it's time to sit in on the first lecture of the weekend. Performing the night before, Montreal producer Philippe Aubin-Dionne, a.k.a. Jacques Greene gives Bass Camp attendees an oral history of career, from his early beginnings trading messages back and forth on Myspace with Rustie, to being asked to do a remix by Radiohead. He even fesses up to the origin story of his name. Seeking some honest feedback from his record label Lucky Me, Philippe sent over some tracks, saying they were by a “friend named Jacques from Montreal.” Once Lucky Me expressed interest in working with Jacques, Philippe had no choice but to reveal that it was actually him, and Jacques Greene was born. After Jacques Greene’s Q&A, Bass Camp Montreal took over the Phi Centre’s numerous recording studios, and the participants hit the ground running. The studios have an open door policy, with Bass Camp’s attendees free to roam from room-to-room, offering ideas, or just listening intently as collaborations unfold. As a special treat, legendary New Orleans hip-hop producer Mannie Fresh stopped by the Phi Centre before his scheduled performance with DJ Quik. He gave Bass Camp attendees a tutorial on the E-Mu SP-1200 drum machine and sampler, one of the tools that defined the sound of early hip-hop. With creativity flowing, it’s obvious this environment will breed innumerable collaborations, both for this weekend, and beyond.
