I want these on every single chair during the ceremony. I spent about 2 weeks getting research together. After determining they are SO EXPENSIVE to buy, I found out how to do it: take circles of fabric and cut them into a spiral. I researched “flowy fabrics.” Geez, so much different types of fabrics out there! And different types of fabric within each category. Ok, organza and tulle it is. I experimented with tulle I got from Aunt Barbara and cousins’ bridal shower present. I cut several circles of different sizes with spirals of different widths and ended up being happy with 10″ circles. I bunched a number of these tulle circles together and decided that I wanted 10 bunches for each chair: 5 of each color (white and yellow). I searched high and low for fabric stores that carried 10″ yellow organza and white tulle rounds.
Not many places carry yellow, most places had rounds that were too small, and the places that had 10″ rounds did scalloped or finished edges (for the purposes of containing gifts). I finally decided on bolts (really long, wide rectangle of fabric wrapped around a piece of cardboard sold by the yard). This step easily took the bulk of the days. I had to decide on a sash to wrap around the chair (I didn’t want to do the part that wraps above and below the chair). I had to Google how tall the parts of the chair was in order to try to visualize how wide I wanted the sash to be. Man, Google had so many searches from me alone in the past 6 months. Luckily, not only had someone attempted a DIY chair sash before, but also uploaded dimensions of the chairback to the Internet! Ok, so I decided I wanted a white sash behind a yellow sash to wrap around the chairs. Now the question was how much to buy. I’m really bad at math. I’m especially horrible at word problems. I basically needed to know: how much of each fabric should I buy for 120 chairs if the decorations consist of 2 sashes (8″x32″) and 10 rounds (10″ diameter) for each chair, if the fabric comes in 45″ or 54″ wide bolts and is sold by the yard?
Geez, if I knew I was going to be using word problems to plan my wedding, my 8-year-old self might have paid more attention in skool. Who do I call when I have a difficult math question? Mr. I-keep-a-Mensa-card-in-my-wallet Takishita, that’s who! I’m realizing I’m reaching a point where I don’t have much time. So a 10:30PM Skype screensharing sesh on a work night was necessary. For your pleasure, I have captured some screenshots of our conversation. Here’s me super stressed out, Keith on my spreadsheet. It’s very messy :X It’s even shared with my tab that shows rental items. Speaking of messy, please do excuse my night hair, ew. But then we determined that we had to take it to the next level and draw it out. So the screenshot below is Keith opening up his programs and asking if I spotted anything that was the Apple version of MS Paint. You see that icon on the third column, third row? That hand drawn object with a pencil? That almost says “art” at the end?
I pointed that out, but it turns out it’s not an art app. It’s a hard drive. Ok, that helped break the stress a bit. I Googled for some Chrome art extensions but Keith just started to open up PPT. So at this stage Keith is describing to me the least wasteful way to cut circles by staggering them. You better believe he used the Pythagorean theorem. (If you are actually curious, Keith made a 30/60/90 triangle using the centers of the circles to show how much space it would save compared to a grid format. When he muttered “root 3” I just got lost and started thinking about ducks.) And then we went the sash+rounds route. Here’s what Keith told me would be the most efficient way to cut 1 sash and 5 circles if the width of the fabric is 45″: Take out the drop shadows and identify a good repeating pattern: And 40 minutes later I feel so much better. From here it was counting up to 120 total of these, and then playing with the alternative of doing only circles for white (no sash) to save money.
