used barber chairs for sale in nj

on September 06, 2011 at 9:35 AM, updated FRENCHTOWN — A team of barbers is stepping forward to fill the void left by the death in February of longtime Frenchtown barber Don Schaible. The Frenchtown Barber Shop is scheduled to open next door to the National Hotel on Friday, Sept. 16. It is an enterprise of Melissa Maier of Erwinna, Pa., who also owns Euphoria, a unisex spa and salon on Trenton Avenue. But the new place will have a manly atmosphere, Maier promises. She said that when Schaible passed away, she wanted to continue the tradition of giving men their own “haven.” She grew up in Baptistown and her grandfather was one of Schaible’s customers. His three-chair shop at the corner of Race and Bridge streets was established in 1901 as Slack’s Barber Shop and was taken over by Schaible in 1963. Two of the three barber chairs hadn’t been used for decades, except as seating for men who stopped in to chew the fat with the barber. A TV set and a police radio provided supplementary entertainment.
Actual haircut time was brief as Schaible was known for his quick work. Brad Myhre, a Frenchtown borough councilman who got his first haircut at Schaible’s, says, “Don Schaible’s Barber Shop was the focal point of our town and a piece of our history. It was the place to go for the latest news. I know my grandfathers miss it a lot. You take it for granted, then it’s a small crisis of where you’re going to get your hair cut.” He said, “I heard they tried to open in the old shop, but instead went to Dorsey Reading’s building. I’m not sure it will have the same environment as Don’s, but it will be good having it in town.” Schaible’s fixtures were not available for the new shop, so Maier is using three other vintage chairs that will be in keeping with the 1940s motif. “Men’s grooming is a lost art,” says Maier, recalling a time when men would come to a barbershop for a shave. Her shop will offer shaves with straight-edge razors and hot towels in addition to haircuts, which will range from $15 to $25.
Although Euphoria staff might fill in now and then, the new shop will have its own staff, a mix of male and female barbers. The shop at 33 Race St. will operate Wednesdays through Sundays. On opening day, Sept. 16, there will be a cut-a-thon to benefit River Valley Waldorf School of Upper Black Eddy, Pa. from 3 to 8 p.m. Haircuts will be discounted and hot dogs will be given out. The shop is in the old Kirschner’s Appliance building that was later remodeled into three storefronts by Reading, winning an award from the county Planning Board.
