A Holy Cross Catholic Church program that provides hot meals for low-income residents, the Lord’s Table serves dinner every Tuesday at 6 p.m. at the former Holy Cross chapel on the corner of Everett and Magnolia streets. The Moorpark Knights of Columbus use the building for meetings. “Some people may not be familiar with the program,” said Chris Johnson, the project coordinator. “We’re hoping to increase exposure and hope to increase attendance.” On most Tuesdays, Johnson and his wife, Sandy, members of the parish for 13 years, arrive early to set up tables and chairs while volunteers bring in the food. At 6 p.m., after a group prayer, dinner is served. Organizers save a few plates for anyone who is late. “Our goal is serve all the food that is there,” Johnson said. Any leftovers are offered to attendees to take home. Johnson, 57, who took over as project coordinator in July, praises the efforts of Sandy, also 57. “She’s the silent force behind the title,” Johnson said with a chuckle.

Together the two, who are both retired from the healthcare field, aim to make the community aware that hot meals are available to those in need. About 75 hot meals a week are served through the Lord’s Table program, which depends on the “generosity and tremendous cooking skills” of volunteers, according to the church’s website. “( Volunteers) are vital,” Johnson said. “It is those groups that are responsible for providing meals and serving. Without them there would be no meal.” “The program is open to anyone that wants to show up and help out,” Sandy Johnson said. Although the Lord’s Table sees many familiar faces willing to offer a helping hand—like the families who show up on Tuesdays— the program welcomes additional volunteers. The Lord’s Table also teams up with local service and nonprofi t groups not associated with the parish. Every other Tuesday FOOD Share offers bags of groceries for those who attend the dinner. In the past, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, churches as well as Kiwanis and Rotary clubs have given their time as volunteers and have made financial contributions.
