Eero Saarinen Womb Chair & Ottoman Faithfully reproduced by Pash Exquisitely comfy, sleek and stylish, this chair has it all. Eero Saarinen Womb Chair & Ottoman , designed in 1948, it was the result of collaboration with Charles Eames. Saarinen sought to design a comfortable chair which would allow several sitting positions rather than one rigid one and alas, the womb was born! Exquisitely comfy, sleek and stylish, this chair has it all. A real must for anyone serious about furniture and design. Designer Eero Saarinen said, "A chair should not only look well as a piece of sculpture in a room when no one is in it, it should also be a flattering background when someone is in it." The womb chair fulfils both requirements with a beautifully organic grace. The wide, solid stance of this very functional chair allows the sitter to sprawl out every which way. Ottoman 63cm W x 52cm D x 42cm H. After winning the Museum of Modern Art Organic Design Competition with Charles Eames for their experiments with bent plywood in 1941, Eero Saarinen was eager to continue exploring the possibilities of a chair that achieved comfort through the shape of its shell, not the depth of its cushioning. Initially, he began the investigation with designs for smaller fiberglass task chairs, but changed direction when Florence Knoll approached him and asked, “Why not take the bull by the horns and do the big one first? I want a chair that is like a basket full of pillows…something I can curl up in.” While that’s not exactly where Saarinen ended up, the suggestion inspired one of the most iconic, and comfortable, chairs of the modern furniture movement.
Like many of Saarinen’s furniture designs, the Womb Chair required production techniques and materials still in the infancy of their existence. Saarinen and Florence Knoll found a boat builder in New Jersey who was experimenting with fiberglass and resin to help develop manufacturing methods for the new chair. Florence Knoll: “He was very skeptical. We just begged him. I guess we were so young and so enthusiastic he finally gave in and worked with us. We had lots of problems and failures until they finally got a chair that would work.” The son of architect and Cranbrook Academy of Art director Eliel Saarinen and his wife, textile artist Loja, Eero Saarinen studied sculpture in Paris and architecture at Yale before working on furniture design with Norman Bel Geddes and practising architecture with his father. He collaborated on several projects in furniture design with his friend, Cranbrook alumnus Charles Eames, and opened his own practice in Bloomfield Hills in 1950. Among the many buildings for which he is known are the Dulles International Airport in Washington, DC, The Gateway Arch in St. Louis, Missouri, and the TWA Terminal at Kennedy International Airport in New York.
He was the recipient of numerous awards and the subject of many exhibitions. We are always interested in as-is Eames furniture in any condition. Chair + Ottoman Price: $ 2,345 Made with High Performance Polyester Boucle Fabrics Stainless Steel legs with adjustable foot glides Dimensions closely match Signature model Specify your own Fabrics 38"w x 39"d x 35"h Base Price for Set(with Shipping) Rove Concepts: $ 1,965 We offer 20 colors of textured boucle 100% polyester fabric made in USA, with the option of providing your own fabric for a minor surcharge. Our fabric is considered high performance with 250k double-rubs, highly resistant to piling or fading. Plus, it has a stainguard on it. Offered in a wide range of colors and fabric grades, however, their signature Classic Boucle is a low performance wool/nylon blend not known for its long life. Offered in the worst possible fabric available, a very cheap wool cashmere blend that will look awful in a very short amount of time. Also offered in a very cheap fabric, a linen cotton blend, that has no life span. Our frame dimensions are a close match to the signature version, just the arms are not quite as wide and have a different slope.
This is the Signature Model. Frame dimensions are a very different than the Signature version, in that, the chair sits more upright than the Signature version and the seat height is too low. Frame dimension seem slightly smaller in overall size than the signature version. Our Frame is #304 grade stainless steel hand-polished to a mirror-like finish. Polished stainless is recognized as a more natural appearance metal feature than plated chrome. Stainless steel is easy to maintain, repairable by hand polishing and offers a near life-time of trouble fee use. Frame is polished chrome hand-ground and hand-buffed to a mirror finish. The chrome plating process of metals has been noted as a generally unsafe manufacturing process for our environment and when scratched or chipped, the steel will rust and it cannot be easily repaired. Frame is #304 stainless steel, but slightly larger tube radius than the signature version. Frame is chrome plated and has a dull, milky finish.
Our shell is constructed of Fiber-reinforced polymer internal shell for greater strength than the plastic shell of the signature brand. The shell of the Signature version is constructed of a HDPE plastic shell that is thin and lightweight. It seems to do the job, there is quite a bit of flex in the back. Rove's womb chair shell is constructed of fiberglass. It doesn't seem to have captured the original's curves and dimensions, but closers than Kardiel's though. Kardiel's womb chair shell is also constructed of fiberglass. It doesn't seem to have captured the original's curves and dimensions, either. The womb chair was designed by Eero Saarinen in 1948 and is considered among the ten best mid-century modern furniture designs. Chairs from this era were known for their form, function and flamboyance. They were more comfortable than their Bauhaus modern predessors, as they were essentially created for "lounging" -- a new activity for the 1950's. In addition to comfort, the womb chair highlights a new form of construction for chairs of the Mid-Century Modern decade.
The basic structure of the chair is the molded fiberglass shell (we use composite polymer now), covered in foam and bright colored upholstery fabrics, also known for this period. Our reproduction of the Womb Chair is very faithful to the original design, with a few minor differences. For instance, we use a molded fiber-reinforced internal shell, not a plastic shell, then sculpt the North America sourced foam over that. Our legs are stainless steel, not chrome plated steel. Our upholstery is what sets our version apart from all others on the market. Our fabric is made in North America, and is 100% polyester made from recycled plastic. This fabric is a textured or boucle surface and is extremely durable (250K double rubs) and is water and stain resistant. Available In These 20 Boucle Fabric Colors We offer our own exclusive collection of "boucle" textured fabric in an extensive collection of colors that are particularly suited for the mid-century modern furniture we make. This fabric and colors were custom made just for us, at a well known North America mill.
Made of 100% polyester (recycled plastic, actually), our boucle's are soft, durable (250K double rubs), stain and UV resistant. We have arranged these swatches in color groups below. If you have a specific fabric in mind, we can either order it or we can use your supplied fabric. In either case, we need to approve the fabric to ensure it can be applied to the specific piece of furniture and we will need to provide a price quote. We are happy to mail you a physical piece of fabic so you can hold it in your hands. I am writing this review from the comfort of my new womb chair and ottoman. Curt and modern classics were THE best to work with. Quality of the chair is excellent, gorgeous fabric and very well made. Delivery was a breeze and the chair was delivered within the window of time I requested. And it was wrapped in a bullet proof crate that kept my new chair safe from the perils of transportation. I highly recommend modern classics and have purchased from them in the past with the same great quality of furniture and curteous service. Excellent customer service and beautiful craftsmanship. Curt and his team replaced royal blue Swan chair and Womb ottoman reproductions of mine that were ruined by water damage with similar but much finer quality pieces. And I was happy to do business with an independently owned, US based company. We are an interior design firm based in Santa Fe, NM. We have worked with Modern Classics on several projects and always appreciate their professionalism and knowledge of their product.
