Soit vous avez la mauvaise adresse ou la ressource a étéSeveral miles west of Sears Tower, Kathy Dolan and a friend, both former Sears, Roebuck & Co. employees, are making computer-generated signs in a small shop in a strip mall along Roosevelt Road in Du Page County. On a clear day, Dolan can see the outline of the skyscraper where, until 18 months ago, she had commuted each day since the world`s tallest building opened almost 20 years ago. Mostly, though, Dolan is too busy to give much thought to her former employer, or the building that once was a symbol of its retailing might.

Now 47, self-employed and a partner in business with Sheila Turney, 41-a friend with whom she shared many lunch and after-work career planning sessions in a few uncertain months in 1989-Dolan said her 24-year career with Sears

Other former workers have tried new careers with companies in different fields-some successfully, some switching after a few months of false starts to job areas more in line with their retail experience. More than a few former Sears executives have made interesting Pentagon-like leaps in careers to represent manufacturers who sell goods to Sears.

Sears has consolidated away thousands of jobs in the last few years as it struggles to cut expenses and remain competitive against more modern and cost- conscious retailers. In the last year alone, employment in Sears` core retailing group has dropped a staggering 23,000, to 314,000.

buy herman miller chair indiaBy June, Sears anticipates cutting another 21,000 jobs, 7 percent of its work force, as it eliminates many non-selling positions in its 863 stores across the country. Most of the recent job cuts have been slated for Sears` part-time staff, a group that receives virtually no severance benefits but which makes up more than two-thirds of Sears` retailing work force, mostly in its stores.

Many part-time workers face the prospect that one young McKids worker said she found particularly unappealing: seeking work in the depressed retail industry while trying to maintain her two-day-a-week college schedule and her grades. Earlier cuts, however, focused on Sears` career employees, those who make up the complex buying and merchandising operations in Sears Tower. It is these cuts that have most affected career executives and administrators at Sears, a company where a 15-year employee may still be considered an upstart. Indeed, corporate identity runs so deep at Sears that some former employees still slip and refer to the Sears staff as ``we``-laughing when they catch themselves. ``It is still `we,``` said Varzino, who spent almost 27 years at Sears before leaving in late 1989. ``You can`t be there that long and not think about it. you have an interest.`` ``I was there not quite 19 years and was 37 years old at the time I left,`` said Carol Steinbock, 38, who accepted a severance payment and quit Sears` catalog operations in July 1989.

``They had had half my life. I thought I`d take the package and work for someone else.`` After about six months off reading a lot of books, Steinbock began looking in earnest for work last January. ``I was getting nervous,`` she said. Steinbock, who joined Sears as a secretary out of high school, tried finding work at several catalog houses, but the offers were for jobs she wasn`t interested in. ``I just walked into Talbot`s one day, because I shop there anyway. I saw that they needed part-time people and I thought, `Maybe this will get me out of the house.``` That was in May last year, and after a month where ``I outsold every sales person on the floor,`` she said, Steinbock joined Talbot`s management training program. She is now assistant manager for the store`s Wabash Avenue store. The shift in careers has been rewarding but not lucrative. She earns about $17,000 a year less than during her last year at Sears. ``I`m willing to deal with it for a little while; I know it won`t be forever,`` she said.
