By Laura on August 28, 2013 So when we bought this house, all the bedrooms were painted in a peach tone (what I like to call “dingy flesh”). Some repainting was definitely in order – the color looked really dated and depressing. We painted our master bedroom with a neutral color, but the other bedrooms also needed help. We decided to inject a little (non-peach) color into these two rooms. The kid’s bedroom is the smaller of the two non-master bedrooms. (No, we’re not stingy parents! That room actually has a bonus “tandem” playroom attached, so our toddler really gets two rooms for the price of one.) For this space, I chose a soft green for a muted color effect that would allow us a variety of options for furniture and design. Right now we’re using her existing nursery decor, which has a mix of green, blue, orange, black, and gray.

We have lots of great art to hang in this room, but we’re waiting to see how the room’s layout will evolve. In the next few months, the toddler may be moving from her crib to a big kid bed, so anything hung on the walls now would just have to be shifted around then. John is planning to make a new cover for the POÄNG chair in here, something with a lighter color or maybe a pattern.

Right now, it’s being used to hold an assortment of items that don’t have a fixed place anywhere else in the house, so it’s really a de facto storage room. But as long as we were painting the other bedrooms, we went ahead and did this one too. I found a cool blue shade at Benjamin Moore called Nimbus Gray that had enough color to pop a little, but still be a versatile backdrop for whatever purpose this room ends up having one day.

We also went with the “ben” line here, with no primer and two coats of paint. My dad helped get this room painted quickly while John and I tackled other projects. Even though it’s currently holding a bunch of random stuff, this spare bedroom now looks so much better. It’s a little more blue than gray on the walls (compared to the swatch), but overall it’s a nice wash of color that modernizes the space. Of course, both of these bedrooms need several finishing touches. We’d like to change out the old metal mini-blinds for some brighter white 2-inch ones. And (like much of the rest of the house) the trim in these two rooms is a strange ecru-almond tone that needs repainting to a brighter white tone. We’re glad to have so much of the room painting done. Sometimes it can feel overwhelming to tackle these big visual areas (i.e. walls!) at the time, but the results are worth it. Thanks for reading, commenting, and your overall support as we share all these updates on the blog!

It’s been a busy summer – lots of house projects, lots to report, lots to come. category: Design + Projects • Tags: interior, kids bedroom, painting, playroom, spare bedroom If you enjoyed this post, please leave a comment or subscribe to our feed and get future articles delivered to your feed reader.2010-2017 © by Joy Kelley | I'm a HowJoyful DesignAs promised, I am back with before/after pictures of the apartment! It’s taken a lot of work, several arguments and tantrums over Ikea assembly directions, and many trips back and forth to stores all over DC, but we finally have a place that is coming together and feels like our own. There is still lots of work to do, mainly getting more pictures and paintings on the walls, but we hope you enjoy what we’ve done with the place thus far. In an effort to prevent you guys from going crazy scrolling back and forth between this and the previous post, I have included the “before” pictures in here as well! Check out the captions if you would like to know where we received some of the things you see in the rooms.
