BENGALURU: Online marketplace Flipkart is set to launch its first umbrella private label 'Flipkart Smartbuy' which will retail electronic accessories and home plastic products. This is the first among several private labels the ecommerce platform is set to launch in the next six months. The Flipkart Smartbuy brand will also have personal care electronic items such as trimmers, hair dryers and hair straighteners. The marketplace also plans to launch a second brand by March which will retail furniture, small appliances, home decor and furnishings. "We have identified gaps in demand and want to position our private labels as brands which have great functionality and are affordable. No one offers this quality at the price points and we are offering a two-year warranty on our cables and chargers. We are considering some projects for offline though it is all at a concept stage," said Adarsh Menon, head of Flipkart's private label.

The push towards private labels from Flipkart comes at a time when Amazon India entered this segment with three launches - Symbol and Myx for men's wear and women's ethnic clothing and Solimo in the small appliances and kitchenware category. Flipkart-owned fashion and lifestyle platform Myntra has been aggressive on launching private labels and gets close to 25% of its business from these labels. The private label brands on Flipkart will be sourced globally and are targeted at clear downstream benefits for the marketplace. "The products will be sourced globally from the best sourcing partners in China, India or Malaysia. Launching private label brands has its associated benefits. It will reduce returns as we offer good quality products; there will be a repeat value for consumers and it will also benefit sellers on the platform. Global companies like Walmart are also doing this as you can give the consumer a better quality product for a price point," said Menon. Apart from the margins, marketplaces create private labels for multiple reasons, says Harminder Sahni, founder at consulting firm Wazir Advisors.

"The large opportunity in brands and an under-served niche of products are a great opportunity for marketplaces to come up with private labels. These labels also differentiate the marketplace as buyers know that these brands are available on this platform," says Sahni. E-commerce major Flipkart on Monday, August 31, 2015 launched its instant refund mechanism facility, a move that will help its customers get refunds as early as within 24 hours of returning the product. Previously, the refund process used to take three to five business days.
