But if the cushion covers are removable, polyester batting requires a gentler touch. Covered Outdoor Cushions Patio sofa cushions with permanent covers stand up well to excess water and a deep cleaning. The fabrics used are thick and resist fading, and the polyester batting maintains its shape and dries quickly. Regularly sweep the cushions with a broom or remove dirt and debris with a vacuum to prevent staining. Once a year or as needed, hose the cushions down thoroughly and clean them with 4 tablespoons of clear liquid detergent mixed with 1 gallon of cool to lukewarm water.

A nylon scrub brush works well in many cases, but follow manufacturer directions. Rinse the cushions as thoroughly as possible when you’re done; leaving behind any trace of detergent creates a dirt-attracting sticky layer. Sun-dry the cushions, flipping them frequently, before placing them back on the furniture or storing them. Covered Indoor Cushions For indoor pieces, polyester batting offers a low-cost, durable means of increasing plushness while creating a sturdy cushion. When the cushions don’t have a removable cover, thoroughly vacuum them once a week to keep both the upholstery and underlying batting clean. Treat any spills or stains immediately. Once a year or as needed, deep clean the sofa cushions according to the care tag. If the tag features a “W,” use water-based methods such as shampooing or steam cleaning. Because polyester batting dries relatively quickly, it stands up to the excess moisture. An “O” also indicates water-based cleaning, but limits you to cold water only.

If the fabric is dry-clean only, noted by an “S” on the tag, you may be able to take the cushions to a dry-cleaner and spot-treat any stains with a dry-cleaning solvent. Uncovered Cushions Both indoor and outdoor cushions may have removable covers, allowing you to clean the upholstery fabric and the polyester batting covered cushion separately. Remove the cover and launder and air dry or dry-clean it according to the tag directions. Clean the batting by wrapping the end of a vacuum attachment with cheesecloth. Secure the cheesecloth with a rubber band and suction dirt and debris from the bare cushions. The cheesecloth acts as a buffer between the vacuum and the batting, preventing damage. Dilute 1/4 teaspoon of mild laundry soap in 4 cups of water and clean the bare cushion with the solution and a soft rag; don’t use a brush or any other abrasive tool. Recover the cushions once the batting, foam and covers are completely dry. Unless there was a large accident, you don’t have to clean the polyester batting regularly or at all.

The upholstery fabric is usually thick enough to protect the batting. Spot Treatments Immediately handling spills decreases the chances that the liquid will soak through the fabric and into the batting. Remove as much of the liquid as you can with clean, absorbent towels, pressing into the cushion to absorb the moisture. Depending on the size of the spill, you may need to use several towels. Remove stains on cushions with an "O" or "W" on the tag using the suds generated by mixing 1/2 teaspoon of mild soap with about 2 cups of warm water. Combine the two ingredients and agitate the solution to generate plenty of bubbles. Dip the rag in just the suds and use this to clean; avoid wetting the upholstery with the water underneath the suds. Dry Cleaning Solvent Use dry cleaning solvent or unflavored vodka for tags marked with an “S.” Wet a white cloth with the product according to manufacturer directions or by covering the bottle's opening with the cloth and briefly tipping it over.
