The company said plants at Andover, Hampshire, and Bridgend, south Wales, would close in July as part of an overhaul of its loss-making furniture division, whose products include Parker Knoll upholstery.

A statement today said there would also be "substantial restructuring" at its sites in Chipping Norton, Oxfordshire and Edmonton, London. Worst hit is Andover, where 550 workers are employed making Ducal furniture. Chief executive Nino Allenza, who took the helm in October, said the group was in consultation with staff over the moves but confirmed that 800 workers across the four sites would be affected by the decision. He said: "We are doing everything we can within the group to try to find employment opportunities within our other business units, and we are also providing an excellent level of out-placement counselling." Silentnight, which is based in Barnoldswick, Lancashire, expanded its furniture division by buying Ducal and Cornwell Parker two and a half years ago but has struggled to integrate its acquisitions within the group. Mr Allenza said the businesses had suffered from underinvestment and a lack of new products while imports had also "decimated" the cabinets market.

In its most recent set of results, the furniture division saw turnover fall 21% to £51.7 million and operating losses widen from £1 million to £4.9 million in the six months to August 3. The group added today that trading conditions continued to prove challenging. Silentnight - best known for its hippo and duck characters - is planning a revamp of the Parker Knoll and Ducal brands to appeal to a younger audience. While it will continue to make its traditional ranges in-house, new lines are to be made by sub-contractors both in the UK and overseas. Mr Allenza said while the Parker Knoll brand had extremely high consumer awareness, it had lost its former mass-market appeal. He said that while retaining its classic range, new lines would appeal to younger consumers rather than the sixty plus age-group. The statement added that a £4.5 million exceptional charge associated with the restructuring would be charged to its full year accounts due out in May, with further charges in the current financial year which began in
