Whether it's an elegant Chateau in Provence, or a quaint French cottage, the term " French Country" evokes romantic images of lavender fields, golden sunlight and rustic old-world charm. It is a style that achieves a seamless harmony of the beauty of the region's countryside and its translation into relaxed living at its best. Whilst there are many elements that create the French Country style, the emphasis is always rustic, old world and welcoming. Colours most associated with its style are lemony yellow and mustard gold, red to rust, gentle greens, ocean tones, soft purples, with black and dull grey used to define and ground the brighter tones.
This palette on rough stained or plaster walls will give texture and simplicity, creating a cheery environment that contrasts beautifully with natural rustic wood and iron furniture and accessories. Early French Country furniture was often considered peasant furniture, as its simplification of ornament and line differentiates it from the highly ornate styles made famous by the French Court. Hallmarks of this furniture style include distressed off white paint, lightly stained wood tones (such as oak or elm), rustic carvings and cane panel inserts instead of heavy upholstery. Wrought iron and distressed metal also feature strongly in table bases and outdoor furniture. French country Fabrics include lightly coloured linens, either plain or toile, lace, checks mixed with florals and old tapestries. Lighting focuses on dark bronze or unpolished metal chandeliers with crystal droplets, accents of damask in shades, and scrolled old-iron lamp bases. Lanterns and wall sconces provide romantic lighting and ambiance in the evening.
