Our clients, our partners, and our studio are a reflection of our values. Who we work with constantly continues to shape us. We have worked hard to build a team from varied backgrounds and specialties. They’re creative thinkers–fearless and boundless. They share a devotion to crisp, smart design, and an elegant and intuitive approach to problem solving. They are who we choose to spend our days with. We respect the power of brand. We believe great design relies on rigorous preparation. Our creative strategy is always rooted in design principles. We pair that consistency with agility; a relish for new approaches. Every detail considered through the lens of experience and the realities of production. From grandiose Gothic-style works to modern and practical designs, two very different types of art will be sharing a home through mid-September at the Museum of Craft and Design. The works of painter and sculptor Holly Lane can be seen there until September 15th; and the stories and designs behind one of the nation’s most iconic furniture design companies, Herman Miller Inc, will be on display until September 22nd.

Holly Lane was studying painting as an undergraduate when she began to think about frames differently, most artists viewing frames as an unnecessary border which should preferably go unnoticed. “…if a painting had a frame at all, it was a thin self-effacing line, serving as protection for the art, and as a conceptual dividing line. The frame was a line that signified that all that was within was art, and all that was outside the frame was not art.” ~Holly Lane Lane began to view the frame as a significant part of the art piece, sometimes even the more dominant part. The “Holly Lane: Carving Allegories” exhibit features some of Lane’s dark old gothic-style painting/frame hybrids, as well as extravagant regal-looking sculptures. “I realized that a frame could be many things; it could be an informing context, it could be an environment, it could be a fanfare, it could extend movement, it could be a conceptual or formal elaboration, it could embody ancillary ideas, it could be like a body that houses and expresses the mind, and many other permutations.” ~Holly Lane

Meanwhile, Herman Miller, Inc. has worked with a number of legendary designers such as George Nelson, Charles and Ray Eames, Gilbert Rohde, Isamu Noguchi, Alexander Girard, Robert Probst, Steve Frykholm, Bill Stumpf, and Don Chadwick, just to name a few. Herman Miller products are known for riding the line between art and practicality with their modern and unique furniture designs. The “Good Design: Stories from Herman Miller” exhibit includes drawings, models, prototypes, photos, original designed objects, and oral histories which showcase the creation and evolution of many masterpieces designed at Herman Miller, Inc. The exhibit also presents visitors with a collection of “stories,” which embody four characteristics of good design: Ergonomics for healthier seating, white collar work to support new kinds of work, Graphic Communications to effectively communicate a message, and Mid-Century Classics to furnish a new type of living space. The West Michigan based company is most known for furniture designs such as the the Marshmallow Sofa by George Nelson, the molded plywood Lounge Chair by Charles and Ray Eames’, and the Aeron Chair by Don Chadwick.
