Herman Miller's Embody is one of the best office chairs on the market, and the company has a reputation for excellence in design and engineering. So we were surprised when both armrests on our review unit of the Embody independently stopped working within just a few years. (Two and a half, to be exact.) We subsequently saw the same issue on a second Embody. The Embody's cost has come down from a whopping $1,600 to a more manageable $1,100 or so, but that's still a lot of scratch; shouldn't a Herman Miller product last longer than that? After all, the company does guarantee their products for 12 years. But if you've got a busted Embody and don't want to go through the hassle of shipping it back to HM for repairs, living without it for a spell, then waiting around for the delivery guy, we figured we'd see if we could fix ours using basic household tools. The arm issue was limited to early production, identified, and soon thereafter resolved via product design--it is no longer an issue.

We would like to point out that the warranty really is the best solution for any covered issues, and we pledge to make it as convenient as possible. Repairs oughtn't be attempted by the user as it voids your warranty, not to mention there is the potential for frustration and injury.Any owner of an early Embody with the product problem depicted in the video should contact us for warranty repair. We will gladly assist with return arrangements, and the customer will receive a fixed or replaced chair. Having repaired dozens of failed Eames shock mounts over the years, I should have been more vigilant to the warning signs. One the original factory glue joints on my 1976 lounge failed while I was sitting in the chair. You can guess what happened next. The chair back, supported entirely by one side, swings back and snaps the beautiful rosewood shell. I looked into 2 possible repair options. Alfie Hume's solution... to replace the lower back panel with a new rosewood shell, color matched to the originals, with new shock mounts, would run about $2500.

No slight on Alfie's work, but that's $1000 more than I paid for the chair, and I'd still end up with rosewood from a different flitch than the original. The place that does the wooden shock mount replacements (I forget the name) had a different plan. They'd router the inside of the shell, leaving only the outer rosewood ply, and laminate in new inner plies. That repair was about $900. With their wooden shock mounts, it came to about $1600. I figure that for that price, I can probably find a an original lower back panel. In the meanwhile, I thought I'd take a stab at my own repair. What have I got to lose? Consensus here at the office is that the leather armpads last longer, are more comfortable to the touch, and make the chair's user feel special.

An arm kit can be purchased though, but the price is far more as the arms are integrated into the frame. In comparison to the stock armrests, are the leather armrests softer, thicker, more supple? The leather armpads are much softer, more supple and all around say luxury.
