Wegner designed over the years. The chair was introduced by FDB Furniture in 1944 and has been in production ever since. Wegner stresses the importance of freedom of movement and ergonomics in his chair design – features particularly embodied by the rocking chair. To accompany the rocking chair, Wegner designed a footstool, a seat and back cushion as well as a neck support. Both the rocking chair and the footstool sport hand-woven seats in natural paper yarn. When it comes to buying mid-century Danish chairs and sofas a known designer can add a lot to the price. At the Top of the tree you’ll find Finn Juhl and Hans Wegner. A Wegner Papa Bear chair will cost you around £7000-£8000 re-upholstered in new quality fabric. They’re in great demand all over the world from the Far East to the USA and Europe, and if you want one they’re relatively easy to find at a price. If you can’t afford a Papa Bear then Danish maker Skipper produced a cheaper option at the same time. Four years ago we sold this one for £750 in “as is “ condition, and the buyer is about to have it re-upholstered. Today we’d have to ask around £2000 for the same chair as people have moved to this as the next best option. So after fabric and upholstery costs its about a third of the price. The age, quality and design are all similar, but the cachet of the Hans Wegner name is the difference. If you’re looking for a great chair we think there are some amazing options by lesser known designers, and even unknown ones.
At the next step down on the Danish design ladder you’ll find some really talented people like Arne Vodder, Illum Wikkelso, Kurt Ostervig, Bender Madsen, Poul Volther, Borge Mogensen , Ib Kofod Larsen and a few others. If you then look to other Scandinavian countries you’ll find people like Henrik Kayser of Norway and Folke Ohlsson in Sweden. All working and designing pieces during the golden age of Scandinavian Design throughout the 1950s and 60s. Certain models are extremely rare, much more so than Papa Bear chairs, yet can be bought for between £1500 and £2500 re-upholstered. Others like the Folke Ohlsson chairs for Fritz Hansen are easier to find, but due to increasing demand for quality pieces by lesser known names are now noticeably more expensive than they were 3 or 4 years ago unfortunately. Chairs like these which were once no different in price to good models by unknown designers will now set you back around £1000 re-upholstered, which is around double what they were 3 years ago .
On the next step down, but equally well made you’ll find various variants of what we call classic Mid-Century Danish armchairs by unknown designers and makers. In “ as is “ condition we’re now selling them at around £400, with upholstery costs of around £200-£250, plus 5 to 6 metres of fabric. This is about 50% more than 2 to 3 years ago as demand is pushing prices ever higher in Denmark. In the UK people usually bought matching sets, but this was really rare in Denmark, so original pairs are thin on the ground . You can be lucky and find good quality fabrics on roll ends in fabric warehouses at as little as £15 a metre, or we have suppliers with a good range of colours for between £30 and £60 a meter. It all depends what you are wanting as top-end fabrics can cost £100 a meter or more. Medium to large armchairs need around 4.5-6 meters of fabric, so the fabric costs can make a large difference in final costs. We find that many customers want to choose their own colours and fabrics, some like neutrals, others go for vibrant shades, and others like a pattern.
