For many travelers, a hotel is much more than a place to sleep. Extras like swimming pools, Wi-Fi access and complimentary breakfast can be the deciding factor in choosing one place over another. But for those seeking a truly unique experience, many lodging properties throughout Minnesota offer sleeping quarters, history and other quirks that can’t be found anywhere else. Likely the northernmost resort in the continental U.S., Prothero’s sits at the tip of Minnesota’s Northwest Angle, which is surrounded by Canada on three sides and requires a passport to enter. Once there, guests will find peaceful solitude in any of the resort’s six log cabins, with impromptu fish frys, music and marshmallow roasts around the lakeside fire pit. Minnesota is home to more than 100 breweries and counting, but only one has a hotel attached.

Part of the Fitger’s complex, which includes the brewery, multiple restaurants and nightclubs, shops and a salon, Fitger’s Inn boasts unique guestrooms and suites with views of either the city or Lake Superior. All of the amenities can be accessed without stepping foot outside, making it a great option year-round. Opened in the 1920s as an exclusive private club, this lodge on the National Register of Historic Places now welcomes guests to bask in the beauty both inside and surrounding the property. With Lake Superior on one side and Judge C.R. Magney State Park on the other, the lodge offers a respite from daily life, with no phones, TVs, Wi-Fi or reliable cell service. The gorgeous dining room, with its Cree Indian design and 20-foot stone fireplace, is a destination in itself. This historic log building—the only full-service lodge within a Minnesota state park—was built in 1905 and features a spacious lobby and stone fireplace, with additional lodging in suites and cabins nearby.

There’s no need to rough it here, with a restaurant that serves three meals a day, wireless Internet access, and heat and air conditioning. A 13-mile boat ride is the only way to reach this historic hotel inside Voyageurs National Park on the Canadian border. Built in 1910 by a timber baron, the hotel has a storied past, particularly during the Prohibition days, and the original on-site saloon retains its uneven wood floors with pockmarks from the loggers’ hobnail boots. One woman’s dream became a reality in the woods outside Long Prairie, where Joyce LaVoie built a one-room, octagonal treehouse that can be rented out year-round. The quaint cabin is equipped with a double bed and cot, wood stove and wraparound deck, with an outhouse and lanterns in place of plumbing and electricity. Breakfast is included and hand delivered to the tree. For a deluxe treehouse retreat, check into Ludlow’s Dreamcatcher cabin on Lake Vermilion, with four stories, whirlpool tubs, multiple decks and a washer/dryer.

You don’t have to ride the rails to experience life on the train. Built in 1888 out of Sioux Quartzite, the formidable building anchors Pipestone’s historic downtown.

Some rooms feature period furnishings with accents like clawfoot tubs and vintage wallpaper. If you’re into ghost stories, ask about Room 308 on the town’s Saturday night ghost walks. Dating back to 1869, the former Fillmore County Jail lives on as a historic inn in southeastern Minnesota’s Bluff Country. Guests can stay in the former sheriff’s quarters, the detention room and even the cell block, which sleeps up to five “inmates” in semi-private jail cells. Other former jails have been turned into B&Bs in southern Wykoff and Taylors Falls. Moored on the Mississippi River with the downtown skyline as its backdrop, the Covington Inn is one of the country’s few floating bed-and-breakfasts. Each of the four rooms feature private baths, deck access and fireplaces, and breakfast is cooked in the galley and served in the stately salon. The oldest continually operating lighthouse on the North Shore of Lake Superior was transformed into a bed-and-breakfast in 1999, with three rooms in the keeper’s quarters plus the skiff house a few steps away.

Maintained by the Lake County Historical Society, the lighthouse’s beacon still flashes three times a minute, 24/7, and the light tower and two other buildings on the property are open for tours. Most of the rooms here are standard hotel fare, with the exception of two: The ’57 and ’59 Chevy suites, which feature retro decor and real Chevy convertibles that have been transformed into beds. Get up close and personal with our production facilities, see how our beer is kegged and canned, and get an inside look at our warehouse and cellar. The tour begins and ends in the Indeed taproom, where you’ll sample our flagship  beers and seasonal offerings! Tours typically last about 60-75 minutes. You must be 21 and have valid ID to sample any beer. (Please bring your ID, we can’t serve you without it!) Attendees must be older than 13 years old to go on a tour. Babies must be carried. Each tour is limited to 30 guests, and we only accept online registration for tours. There is a maximum number of eight guests per email address.It’s perfect, isn’t it? It’s the drink that stands equally well alone as it does when paired with food truck fare or a five-course meal.

It can be as lowbrow or pretentious as you want, but it always seems to be just what you need. Our taproom is all about the beer, and so much more. Indeed was the first production brewery to open a taproom here in the heart of Northeast Minneapolis, and we couldn’t be more proud of the space we’ve created here for folks to enjoy a beer with friends, and friends they haven’t met yet. Since opening the doors and selling our first pints of beer in August of 2012, we’ve expanded from our cozy main taproom to include an auxiliary taproom just down the hall, which we’ve affectionately dubbed The Ox. We've extended our taproom hours to Wednesdays, creating Indeed We Can, and Sundays, now with growler sales! Belly up to the bar, and our Cicerone Server certified  ‘beertenders’ will take good care of you, whether you've got a standing order of a Day Tripper every Friday at 5pm or you're brand new to craft beer and looking for a full menu tour. With 16 tap lines of Indeed beer, there's something for everyone here.

So grab yourself a pint, challenge your neighbor to a round of cribbage, or simply sit a spell in the Minnesota sun on our dog-friendly patio. Whatever brings you in, we’re happy to have you. We have taproom space available for private events every day of the week except Wednesday, and were voted Best Brewery by Minnesota Meetings and Events in the Best of Minnesota 2015. Our cozy taprooms could be a perfect fit for your next gathering. The Main Taproom holds 70 seated, 100 standing and is available Monday and Tuesday. The Ox Taproom holds 40 seated, 70 standing and is available Monday to Sunday, excluding Wednesdays for our Indeed We Can program. Do you make donations? We would love to contribute to every worthy cause, but unfortunately we are unable to accommodate every request.  The majority of our charitable efforts are focused on our Indeed We Can program. We are dedicated to supporting our local community, so we do donate to causes outside of Indeed We Can on a limited, discretionary basis.

We do not reserve tables or chairs in advance.  We want to play fair in our small space so it is first-come, first-served. If you do have a large group, we would appreciate knowing your group size and timeframe ahead of time.  The more prepared we are, the better and quicker we can serve you. Do you serve food? Can I bring in a birthday cake? Happy Birthday to you! We’d love to be a part of your celebration. You’re welcome to bring in your own cake, cupcakes, or other treats, but please be aware that we don’t carry any extra plates, napkins, or utensils. We don’t allow candles, and we ask that you please be considerate and clean up after yourselves when your celebration wraps up. Can I bring my dog? Yes - furry friends allowed! Well-behaved, leashed dogs are welcome on our patio.  We’ll even bring out a water dish to keep them happy and hydrated. Sorry, we cannot have dogs inside the taproom. Tiny humans are welcome. We pride ourselves in offering a family-friendly environment. However, all minors must be accompanied by a parent or guardian after 8pm. Do you have any gluten-free beers? We do not have any gluten-free beers. We do offer a selection of local sodas, cold brew coffee and sparkling water for our gluten-averse friends. Can I get a tour of the brewery?

Is the taproom handicap accessible? Yes, the taproom and bathrooms are handicap accessible. What if I forgot to close my tab?Tabs left overnight can be picked up during regular taproom hours.  An automatic 20% gratuity will be added to the total. Please call 612-843-5493 if you have questions, or want to check if your card is here. How much does a growler cost? It costs $5 for a new 64oz or 750ml growler. A regular fill on a 64oz growler costs $12, specialty fills are a few dollars more. Specialty fills of 750ml growlers will vary by beer style and availability. See our taproom staff for details. We do not take growler deposits. Do you fill other brewery’s growlers? If your growler is clean, we will fill it! Growlers from any brewery are welcome. We do not fill or clean dirty growlers for you.

When can I get a growler fill? Growlers are available for sale during taproom hours.  Growlers must be purchased and off-premises by 10pm. How long is a growler fill good for? Growlers should be enjoyed within 24-72 hours of filling for best results.  Keep filled growlers cold and dark.  Do not allow a filled growler to warm or freeze, due to potential shattering. What should I do once I’m finished with my growler? Once you've sipped that last drop, throw away the cap and clean the growler with hot water immediately. Soap may be used as long as it is not fat or oil-based. Allow the growler to air dry. Do this, and your growler will be ready for a fresh fill whenever you are! Where can I park? Parking for motor vehicles can be found directly outside the taproom entrance off of 15th Street, and in the back lot, directly behind the brewery, off of Monroe Street. Bicycle parking is available by the taproom entrance. Street parking is also available in the area.
