We're typing this while sitting at a bar, a bar overlooking half of the apron and one of the busy runways at Hong Kong International Airport. The view is unparalleled, a frequent flyer sweet secret, and it's only found on the upper level at Cathay Pacific's Business Class lounge, The Wing. The Wing itself is nothing new, but the layout and amenities of the place have recently been totally revamped, updated and kitted out with designer furniture, power outlets where you want them, and classic Asian touches like towering bamboo stalks. Even before the renovation, The Wing ranked as one of our favorite airline lounges in the world. Now, with the addition of a cozier lower level, a "Coffee Loft," and sexy wire Eames chairs, our heart starts racing at the thought of spending a few hours within its walls. But only within the walls, you see, as The Wing is famous for its soaring ceiling…or lack of one. The lounge is two levels, and heading to the upper, larger area means looking up to the faceted airport roof far above.
It's HKG's exoskeleton exposed. The renovation was completed only recently, in January 2012. eames chair replica indiaWe'll not dwell on the way the lounge was pre-renovation, though you can easily compare by viewing our photo gallery of it in December 2010. throne chairs for rent in miamiCathay Pacific brought in Foster + Partners and quite obviously never looked back.table and chair rentals hacienda heights How to get into The Wing:chair cover rentals torrance ca You must be traveling in Business or First on Cathay Pacific or its oneWorld partner airlines. table and chair rentals fort mcmurray

Head straight back, all the way back, to The Coffee Loft. The Coffee Loft is our favorite spot in the entire lounge and yet it didn't exist before. Here you'll have excellent views of gates 2, 3 and 4, plus out across the whole apron. There's four different types of seating depending on how upright you'd like to be: Foster bar stools, Eames wire chairs, Knoll "Oscar" armchairs and cozy, recessed banquette couches. In the mornings, a dedicated barista makes you real coffee (versus pressing a button on an instant machine) and serves up a variety of pastries made using AOC (Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée) butter from France. He may be a bit biased, but Cathay Pacific's General Manager of Product, Alex McGowan, claims they're "the best pastries in Hong Kong," and rest assured that this is not a metropolis short on tasty pastries.
In the evening, The Coffee Loft swings into a cocktail focus. Now, because The Coffee Loft is clear at the end of the second level, most loungers don't make the trek back here. And that barstool all the way in the corner overlooking the airport? That's unofficially our barstool, the location in which we drafted this very post (note the power outlets directly underneath the bar top). Remember, once you're in the lounge everything is complimentary. The food, the drinks, the WiFi…all of it. So, we'll see you up there? TCDC in collaboration with Herman Miller and Chanintr Living present the Essential Eames, a design-oriented exhibition elaborating how ideas and creations can become immortal and remain influential in contemporary life. The exhibition will capture the spirit and philosophy behind the most famous couple in design, Charles and Ray Eames. Well-recognized icons in the world of design, their impact in the area of furniture design is in particular unparalleled. Based on the book, “An Eames Primer”, authored by the design duo's grandson Eames Demetrios, the exhibition will trace the life and work of the couple who are credited with “…changing the way the 20th Century sat down” by the Washington Post. Many are surprised to learn than not only furniture, the duo also created many other masterpieces in architecture, exhibitions, toys and films that incorporate elements of art and science as well as design, architecture, functionality and aesthetic. Essential Eames: Icons of 20th Century Design is a temporary design exhibition that explores the spirit, the philosophy, the idea and the creativity of Charles and Ray Eames – the legendary design maestros whose works profoundly shape contemporary lifestyle and revolutionize furniture design since the 50s.
The exhibition covers architecture, furniture, exhibition design, films, toys, and philosophy in various interactive zones. Visitors will get to see rare and never-before-seen images, sketches and collector’s pieces from Herman Miller’s own archive including a special chair designed for Pope John Paul II, vintage fiberglass Eames shell chair as well as over 90 pieces of furniture and also more than 125 interesting film designed by the Eameses including ‘Glimpses of the U.S.A’ and ‘Powers of Ten’. For inquiry, please contact TCDC Information Counter, tel. 02 664 8448 ext. 213, 214. The Eames Office is dedicated to communicating, preserving and extending the work of Charles and Ray Eames. All three of those dimensions are important to keeping the office useful and vital. Eames Office believes that Charles and Ray’s work was the result of a way of looking at the world—a design philosophy and process that is worth sharing in many different dimensions— and creating wholly new works is as consistent with that philosophy as restoring and distributing classic ones.
