This is the distance between the table edge and the nearest wall or piece of furniture. Clearance allows room to sit comfortably at the table and to pull the chairs back when sitting down or leaving the table.

It also allows another person to move behind the seated diners. To determine the total amount of space you need, add double the amount of clearance to the length and width of the table. Basic Clearance The minimum clearance should be 30 inches on each side of the table, so you need to add 5 feet to the length and width of the table. For a table 6-feet-long by 3- feet-wide, this amounts to a space 11-by-8-feet, or 88 square feet of floor space. Generous Clearance A generous clearance of 48 inches, or 4 feet, provides spacing for the home dining table. This requires adding 8 feet to the length and width of the table.
