Lou Lamoriello is leaving the Devils organization to join the Maple Leafs as general manager. Lamoriello’s 28-year run as Devils president ends less than three months after he had stepped down as New Jersey’s GM, giving way to the hiring of Ray Shero. He is being hired by Toronto president Brendan Shanahan, whom the Devils drafted second overall in 1987. The Maple Leafs haven’t won a Stanley Cup since 1967 and recently have become a laughingstock, finishing 15th in the 16-team Eastern Conference last season with a 30-44-8 record and 68 points.

There was zero accountability on the ice for the Leafs last season, culminating in shifts in which top players clearly weren’t interested in competing. Interim coach Peter Horachek even said on Feb. 10 after a home loss to the Rangers: “Our give-a-sh*t meter has to be higher.” Lou Lamoriello helped the Devils franchise to three Stanley Cup wins. Shanahan has been trying since his hiring in April 2014 to right the ship and not simply rearrange deck chairs on the Titanic. Particularly after this season, however, the Leafs’ “give-a-sh*t meter” clearly has swung to the opposite extreme. To address a locker room void of accountability, Shanahan and the Leafs hired the stern and respected Mike Babcock as head coach in May. They traded curmudgeon forward Phil Kessel on July 1 to the Pittsburgh Penguins. Then on Thursday, like Babcock, they added another old-school, zero-tolerance veteran of the game in Lamoriello. Lamoriello is an interesting choice because the Leafs’ front office under Shanahan has emphasized a more modern, analytics approach to its thinking.

Clearly, their hope is that Lamoriello’s experience and knowledge and winning ways will complement the front office’s forward thinking and analysis to produce new results on the ice at Air Canada Centre.
