The oak chair that JK Rowling used while writing the first two Harry Potter books has been sold by a Salford dad - for £278,000. Gerald Gray, from Worsley, bought the chair in 2009 when his daughter, a Harry Potter fan, spotted it on eBay. Rowling first sold the chair in 2002 during a charity auction. At the time she admitted she was sad to see it go after almost 20 years as it was the comfiest of four mismatched dining room chairs at her former Edinburgh home. Gerald - who runs a vehicle speed control equipment company - has now sold the 1930s chair to an anonymous private buyer following an auction in New York. He said the winning bid far exceeded his expectations and added that he would like to see the new buyer display it somewhere where children could see it, such as a museum or theme park. He said: “I plan to donate 10 per cent to JK Rowling’s charity, Lumos, because that’s what she did in the first place.” The oak chair was one of four mismatched chairs given for free to Rowling for her council flat in Edinburgh.

She sat in front of her typewriter and wrote Harry Potter And The Philosopher’s Stone and Harry Potter And The Chamber of Secrets while sitting on it. The chair was auctioned off at the Heritage Auctions sale, in New York, on Wednesday. It has previously been auctioned twice before - once by Rowling to raise money for the NSPCC. Before she donated it to the Chair-ish a Child auction in 2002, Rowling scrawled a message in paint onto the chair. She wrote: “You may not/find me pretty/but don’t judge/on what you see. “I wrote/Harry Potter/while sitting/on this chair.” The chair is accompanied by a signed letter ‘by Owl Post” describing its history and provenance. The letter reads: “Dear new-owner-of-my-chair / I was given four mismatched dining room chairs in 1995 and this was the comfiest one, which is why it ended up stationed permanently in front of my typewriter, supporting me while I typed out ‘Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone’ and ‘Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets’.
