The chairman of governors at Barrow Sixth Form is leaving his role on a high after seeing the college secure a glowing Ofsted report. Derek Lyon has stepped down after 20 years as chairman and 26 years on the board of governors and hands over to current vice-chairman Mike Phipps. The College was rated ‘good’ in all areas and ‘outstanding’ for law in its latest report which praised the enthusiastic and passionate staff and increasingly effective governance. Derek said being part of an organisation which enhances students’ lives and helps shape their future had been an honour for him. “Barrow Sixth Form prepares students for their onwards journey, supporting young people to take the next step to apprenticeships, university or further education. “The staff and governors take an overall abiding interest in the students’ welfare and wellbeing. It’s very welcoming here – I wish there had been this sort of place when I was a student.”

Derek, who has overseen changes including a new library, state-of-the-art university style Learning Hub and worked with four principals, said he was overjoyed at the recent Ofsted report which reflected the tremendous hard work of all the teaching and support staff. “I can go out with the college’s blaze of glory and confident that it will go on to achieve outstanding in the next report.” The Ofsted report, published last month, says the governors have played a key role in improving the college. Inspectors said the governors were proactive and more involved in the ongoing work of the college. “They have significantly improved their understanding of the college’s day-to-day work by going into classes and observing lessons, talking to students and attending student union meetings. Recently appointed governors have good industrial or educational experience,” they said. Principal David Batten praised Derek’s loyalty and said he had every reason to be proud of the college he passes on in excellent shape to his successor.
