To safely secure a Segway, the use of at least two 15-inch securement loops is recommended, but three loops are preferred. Please turn off mechanized devices and lock the wheels while on the bus lift and again once you are safely secured. If visually impaired, upon boarding we encourage you to inform the coach operator which bus stop you need. Sun Tran requires all mobility devices to be secured using a three-point securement. The coach operator will either secure your mobility device or ensure that you have secured it properly with the minimum three securement points. The mobility device must not move more than two inches in any direction. To obtain securement straps for your mobility device, please call customer service at (520) 792-9222. The bus is equipped with lap belts and shoulder harnesses, and your are strongly encouraged to use them. These restraints help prevent injuries. Should the driver be forced to make a sudden stop, failure to use these restraints may result in your ejection from the mobility device, causing yourself injury. To alert the coach operator that you want to exit the bus, approximately one block before you'd like to get off, press the tape or pull the cord located near you along the windows. When the bus comes to a stop, you may want to allow other passengers to exit first so the aisle will be free for you to maneuver. The coach operator will release the securement straps and guide you to the door. Disabled people who have trouble walking and climbing stairs face enormous obstacles in everyday life. A large student engineering and design team at ETH Zurich (the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology) tackled the challenge of mobility for disabled people and the result is, honestly, breathtaking. The team developed a powered wheelchair dubbed Scalevo that balances on two wheels like a Segway. When faced with stairs, the wheelchair shifts into tracked mode by lowering a pair of rubber tank tracks that handle steps with aplomb.
There’s little point in using words to describe the Scalevo wheelchair when a 3-minute video explains far more eloquently: Seven of the 10-student development team are studying mechanical engineering. Two are industrial design students, which accounts for Scalevo’s futuristic and finished look. Only one student is studying electrical engineering, yet it’s easy to see that the control electronics for the wheelchair are extremely sophisticated. They must be to implement a multimode personal mobility vehicle that can balance on two wheels while carrying a person over terrain. All of the control is handled by a Xilinx Zynq SoC inside of a National Instruments (NI) myRIO development platform, introduced two years ago at NI Week. (See “How Xilinx All Programmable technology has fundamentally changed business at National Instruments.”) The tiny myRIO platform is literally about the size of a paperback book. It sports ten analog inputs, six analog outputs, left and right audio channels, 40 digital I/O lines (SPI, I2C, UARD, PWM, rotary encoder) and an on-board, 3-axis accelerometer, and two 34-pin expansion headers.
Most of that functionality comes straight from the on-board Zynq-7010 SoC. Like all of NI’s RIO products, the myRIO platform is programmed with NI’s LabVIEW. It’s clearly a great choice for this sophisticated mechatronic project. Remember, this was a student project! What will these young engineers do after they graduate?
