Reserve your gear nowSnorkel / Beach Rentals Kona’s snorkeling is some of the best in the United States. We have snorkel rentals for all ages and sizes, from the first-timer to the experienced free-diver. We stock high-quality gear, and we also take the time to make sure it fits and that you know how to use it.

Boasting the most pristine coral reefs in the United States, snorkeling the Big Island’s Kona Coast is a snorkeler’s dream. Hundreds of species of reef fish have been identified along our leeward (kona) shores. Snorkeling Kealakekua Bay in front of Captain Cook’s Monument is a fantastic experience for everyone blessed enough to enter the ocean at that historic, beautiful spot. We love seeing our customers come back stoked out at the life, variety, clarity of the Big Island’s “aquarium” waters and encounters with Hawaiian Spinner Dolphins. We also like to take the time to answer any questions you may have and point you toward some of our favorite spots. Enjoy a picture perfect day at the beach at Kamakahonu Bay, in Front of King Kamehameha’s Kona Beach Hotel. Kona Boys rents all sorts of beach gear including snorkel gear, beach umbrellas, chairs, and more. It is an honor to be in this location as it sits adjacent to one of the most significant historical and cultural spots on the island, where King Kamehameha the Great lived and conducted matters of government until his passing on May 8, 1819.

Addtionally, King Kamehameha rebuilt the Ahu’ena Heiau at this location, a temple dedicated to Lono who was the Hawaiian God of peace, agriculture and prosperity. We hope that you’ll drop in and check us out, rent a paddle board and explore the coast like the Hawaiians of years past. Or just rent a beach chair and umbrella and spend a day soaking up the sun and history at the magical Kamakahonu Bay. We look forward to serving you – and then to seeing all of you head toward the beach! My hubby and I are leaving to the BI in March and we are very light skin people. When we go to Florida, we always check in our chairs and umbrella, but now with the whole pay-for-your-luggage-check in- thing we are wondering about it.

We are staying at the ResortQuest Shores in Waikaloa. What would you suggest? Buy chairs/umbrella in the Island or check it in despite the price?? I've been reading this forum for a while, since we are heading to the BI soon. I really appreciate the your time to give us great advice. One destination mentioned in this post Stop by either Costco or Walmart after leaving the airport and buy a couple of low cost ones. Instead of bring them home just leave them at the condo for the next vistors. Also, it's possible the condo your staying in might have chairs & umbrella's already. Many of us buy inexpensive toys, chairs, etc and just leave them behind for the next vistor. People on the beach at Waikoloa do not use umbrellas. It is too windy there most of the time. A-bay has coconut trees at the public access end that provide good morning shade and a bit in the afternoon. People either bring the low slung chairs or sit on the reed mats (roll-up yoga mats) Anything you bring has to be walked in, although you can drop off fairly near to the beach (but still over a path and then down a few stairs).

I don't own either beach chairs or a beach umbrella even though I live here. I had them but gave them away! If you do use an umbrella, secure it really well, because I would hate to have an umbrella that the wind grabbed come flying at me! The entire Kohala coast is windy ... don't worry, you can find shade. One attraction mentioned in this post Ranked of 401 things to do in Island of Hawaii In any case, because it's going to be better to get them here, I suggest you check in and assess the situation, to see if they're really needed or workable. If so, you can head to Kona and buy then at either Walmart or Kmart. Costco sells junk, IMHO. I think it must be seconds. After most everything I bought from that store broke (and I bought a LOT my first year here), I stopped shopping there. Longs has chairs and umbrellas that are reasonable price wise. You might want to check with Resortquest, they might supply chairs and maybe even umbrellas. If not buy here and leave for the next fair folks ;o)

Thank you very much for your advice. I think we are going to get to BI first and then decide what to do. This is my first time in Hawaii. The closest beach to Resortquest and one of the calmest beaches around is A-bay, the one I mentioned. In March it is still winter months, when they make a berm down the beach to keep the high tide out of the fishponds. People sit on the berm. In back of the berm you can't see the ocean. To the north end is a small non-bermed area where the Marriott has all its chairs - no umbrellas. At the south end is all trees. I have never seen anyone set up an umbrella there, and don't know where it would even go except back in the undesirable area where you can't see the ocean. I'm a believer in fitting in with the type of beach scene that goes on where I'm visiting. Umbrellas do not "share" the beach as they block views. People don't carve out that kind of personal space on our beaches, which are mostly small, except for Hapuna - where it is also too windy for umbrellas.

There are plenty of fair-skinned folks, myself included, and in addition to sunblock there are hats, cover-ups, and there is natural shade at some part of most beaches. On Maui you'll find beaches covered with colorful umbrellas and cabanas, but not here. Our beaches are the more beautiful for enjoying and photography because they aren't covered with umbrellas. It's a different aesthetic. Chairs, most people favor the low-slung ones if they can't handle a mat. Mats are a lot easier to carry in. I agree costco is junk.....and over priced, as they are on liquor and a lot of stuff... I quit shopping there years ago...its no deal, unless you are buying for 10 people + Walmart on kona on Henry st is the best choice K- Mart is also good. The new Sports Authotity in Kona also has a lot of very good things The Shores is a class act...they may have stuff to loan... But as KK said umbrellas are not common. The area is also known as Waik-a-blow-a and it can get very windy

Down in Kona, at Kahaluu bay, a snorkel beach they rent both chairs and umbrellas. If he wind is blowing up north it will be calm here. Bebel they have affordable chairs/umbrella rentals @ Snorkel Bob's. They have a store near Costco right by the airport. -:- Message from TripAdvisor staff -:- This topic has been closed to new posts due to inactivity.
