Belkis Ayón (Havana, 1967-1999) died at the age of thirty-two, leaving behind a body of work of considerable importance for the history of contemporary printmaking. After months of discussion with the collector I was given the green light to announce that FRG OBJECTS & DESIGN GALLERY will be showing a collection of visionary works rarely seen in the USA by the Cuban artist Belkis Ayón.

The print paintings done from 1988-1999 reveal a surprising array of influences. Imagery and narratives from the Afro-Cuban religion Abaku'a and Christian iconography and ceremony illuminate her own personal mythologies. This vision, along with her stunning use of calligraphy on a heroic scale, brought her international acclaim. I cannot give you an opening date at this time but I assure you that the moment that day is set you will know. This British hit comedy, originally titled "The Square Peg," was directed by John Paddy Carstairs and starring Norman Wisdom who played two characters in the film with Honor Blackman (pre Bond Girl fame). The vintage marquis poster is from the Italian release under the name "io el generale."
