There are plenty of options out there aside from these chairs that have the same ergonomic functionality, they just don't look as fancy.

If design isn't at the top of the list for you in order to buy a chair, then there are plenty of options to consider. Whats most important for those that sit in their office chair for long periods of time is the ergonomic adjustments and comfortability. With comfort being subjective, that is different for everyone. The Herman Miller Aeron chairs are definitely worth it if your budget allows, however most of us simply cannot afford the price tag that comes along with it. As many other respondents answered here, the Alera Elusion is what I consider the cheaper alternative. Now, it’s no Aeron, but for about $140 or so, it’s very competitive. The Zeeland furniture-maker's biggest-selling chair was groundbreaking when it was introduced in 1994. Instead of foam and fabric, designers Bill Stumpf and Don Chadwick engineered a seat of technical fabric called Pellicle, a breathable mesh material. Aeron quickly became the best-selling performance chair of all time, with more than 7 million sold in 134 countries. This pop-culture classic is part of the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art. The first major redesign of the Aeron chair could have a transformative effect on the workplace, Herman Miller CEO Brian Walker told "Mad Money" host Jim Cramer on Thursday, Oct. 20, after the chair was unveiled. "Everything that we think about is 'How do we make your people more productive, more healthy and happy?'
